How do you know if your immune system is healthy or under stress?

Once the body is infected, the pathogens, equipped by nature with their own survival mechanism, take on a life of their own. Many pathogens, such as the Lyme disease bacterium are able to evade detection and hide out in the body; some pathogens move into dormant stages. Due to the wide spread use of antibiotics, super germs have evolved that are resistant to standard anti bacterial treatments. Chronic sinusitis is just one example whereby some individuals, despite multiple treatments of antibiotics continue to become re-infected once therapy is discontinued.

What step can we take to protect our health? Certainly any serious or chronic condition warrants seeking the advice of a health professional….and there are simple and practical actions that can help the immune system to bounce back. If you are experiencing some combination of the above symptoms and know your immune system to be under stress, here are a few suggestions or areas to consider.

1. Change your “Mental Channel”
The mind is a great tool but a poor master. Be proactive in your life but at the same time, accept your life by culturing a mental state of contentment. Seek to reduce negative and useless, compulsive thinking. The ego is that aspect of our nature that has a dysfunction relationship with the present moment. The ego continually drives our attention to the past or the future in search of…..well….something…..anything…. but the way it is.

So which channel do you choose to tune into? Every thought carries bio-electrical energy, every thought does matter and has weight, we are all impacting each other on some level. Positive emotions produce more complex chemicals that activate cells more so than less complex chemicals generated by so called negative emotions. 4. Dietary Habits
Whenever possible obtain and prepare organic food in your own kitchen, blessed with your own loving hands and heart. Living off processed food, even the healthier type, is an unwise move. Canned and frozen food have been prepared in factories where the food is mechanically processed, exposed to plastics or metals as it moves on conveyor belts, slides through tubes etc. and then is packaged in more plastics or plastic lined cans and so on. Then there is the issue that food is typically far from fresh. Do you know the average food travels 1500 miles from the farm to your dinner plate? Family farms in America are disappearing at a rate of one per minute. Here is my suggestion, find where in your area you can obtain fresh local organic produce and support both your own well being and that of your community by buying as much of your food locally and preparing at home.

Better yet find a CSA, a Community Supported Agriculture project in your area. In this scenario you pay a yearly fee to join, learn to grow organic food, work a few hours per month in the fields and share in the crop yield. In my town, parents and children join together to work on the community farm, enjoying good healthy work, sunshine and super fresh organic food. I believe that a major cause of endocrine imbalance is due to our disconnection with the earth’s natural cycles. We are out of tune with night and day, season to season, unaware of where our food is coming from, and all this confusion disrupts the cycles within our bodies, our hormones and our healthy relaxed pulse. Growing even a pot of herbs and caring for them with consciousness and full attention can begin to shift this state of disorganization back to the basics of earth and sky.

Appreciation is an all important factor. I thank my food! You don’t have to believe in religious blessing. Pre-eating I take a few breaths, calm my mind and really notice and appreciate my food before digging in. I consider the silent intelligence in the food and give thanks. While its good to be grateful for all food, processed foods are seriously devoid of life force, so do replace with smarter choices.
